Since opening in 1997, the Mark Mungeam designed championship course has received numerous national recognitions and awards. This dramatic course is carved out of 230 acres, combines the beauty of nature with stimulating play. There is also a fun, yet thought-provoking, 9-hole par-3 golf course that adults and children alike will love. Cyprian Keyes Golf Club is a daily-fee golf club offering 27 holes through an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole par 3.

Even though the golf club opened in 1997, the property dates back to 1718 when an early settler, Thomas Keyes, bought several lots in the north precinct of Shrewsbury. In 1734, his son, Cyprian, built his home here, a house that was called Spring Garden. Cyprian Keyes was also a deacon of the Congregational Church and an ardent patriot.

After Cyprian Keyes died in 1802 at age 95, the land went through many hands, and after industrialist George Sumner Barton and his wife, Elizabeth Trumbull Lincoln purchased the land. Eventually, the land became the Worcester diocese of the Catholic Church and then sold it to the founders of our golf club.

The design of the clubhouse for Cyprian Keyes Golf Club incorporates parts of the original housing structures of its past residents and reflects the history, heritage, and ambiance of colonial Boylston. Mark Mungeam took the same approach with the golf course. Every hole is unique and while being fashioned out of beautiful woodlands and wetlands. The wetland areas integrated into the golf course add natural beauty to the design.

The course logo represents the marbled salamander, an endangered species for which there are 22 acres of wetlands set aside on the championship course. During colonial days, the salamander was also a sign of welcome and friendship. (ref: History. https://www.cypriankeyes.com/about-us/history-acclaim)

Most golfers will enjoy that they don't have to be incredibly long to enjoy the golf from the back tees, but they need to be accurate. Plenty of forced carries on the course will terrorize any unconfident golf shots. This is not a course for the timid. Tight opening and landing areas stretched at different angles will make players have to curve shots to stay in the shorter grass.

There are plenty of elevation changes that will make picking the right club hit debatable to go along with the precision of shooting into the narrow golf holes. The design will move your eyes off the best target. With most of the fabulous Mark Mungeam's creations, he challenges the golfer to be confident and know the best places to put the ball to have any chance at birdies. Most golf holes at Cyprian Keyes will not allow a golfer to miss shot and still make birdie.

Golfers are penalized heavily for missing fairways and greens. It does not contain large areas of rough on the golf holes' sides to keep the ball out of the thick woods. However, these sides are typically well marked as lateral hazards throughout the golf course. These naturalized areas will keep players from being too aggressive or too wild.

Whenever a course describes itself as "having rolling terrain," it typically means that there are gently elevation changes that most walkers will not find difficult as they play the course. There are severe drops, but most of the climbs back up on the course will be during the play of an entire hole. There are no giant treks to elevated tees or greens at Cyprian Keyes.

Golfers will enjoy the peaceful serenity created by the "jungle" that surrounds the golf holes. As you can see from the video of the 18th hole at Cyprian Keyes, it stands up to the heat of the summer very well. The greens roll well, and fairways are cut low. The course drains well, and the rough is healthy all around the golf course.

The most memorable part of Cyprian Keyes is the lack of width off the tees. A few holes have more room than others to spray the ball. However, most golf holes feel and play narrower due to the lack of space on the sides and woodlands/wetlands surrounding the golf holes. They almost overhang into the hole, making it feel a bit claustrophobic. A good example is on the par 5, 4th hole.

Conditions: Golfers will enjoy conditions and the peacefulness created by the naturalized areas surrounding the golf holes.

Difficulty: The course has plenty of forced carries and narrow golf holes that will challenge any golfer's accuracy.

Practice Green: Great, big practice green located near the first tee.

Value: Decent value during primetime, but a better deal later in the day.

Range: Yes, there is a range on site.

Wear a hard hat: No need for that here.
