The course was laid out with an exciting variety of undulating fairways and subtly sloped greens wandering through the landscape with charming vistas. They were fortunate enough to have two of the game's preeminent designers ply their trade here at Cape Cod Country Club. In 1928, Cape Cod Country Club opened as a nine-hole course called Coonamesset, named for the nearby inn. The golf course was designed by Devereaux Emmett, who also created Wee Burn Country Club in Connecticut and the Old Congressional Country Club outside D.C. The following year, the golf course is rumored to have been redesigned and expanded to 18 holes by legendary golf architect Donald Ross. In the grand tradition of their architects Devereaux Emmet and Alfred Tull, the undulating greens and tees are unique. It also provides a view of the Coonamesset Pond.
A local paper called "The Falmouth Enterprise" once said that Cape Cod CC was "a truly championship course sporty enough for the man who plays in the low 80s— and yet pleasant and practicable for the novice." The contour of the land provides many unique lies and challenging areas to land a shot. Golfers will have to find lines to avoid steep pitches from the fairways to the greens and awkward sidehill lies. The bunkering is well placed here even with the golf course being made when hickory was still in fashion, they will catch aggressive shots and protect the golf course against low scores. The golf course is well guarded by woods but set far enough back and open enough to play a shot back to the hole. There are plenty of penalty areas that are attributed to the woods and well-marked along the golf course. The golf course contains very little water that golfers will have to maneuver around.
Once you get over our few big hills, it is an otherwise flat layout. The exception is the 7th hole and the 18th hole. These two golf holes that are short par 4s, but were built as deep valleys. The golf course remains a relatively easy walk that golfers can enjoy on even the hottest days of summer on Cape Cod. The condition of the Cape Cod Country Club remains faultless. It is annually overseeded for exceptional play.
The undulating greens, natural topography, and the tees' position create a uniqueness about this golf course. Unsuspecting dips and pitches will add strokes to those playing here for the first time. However, the golf course does not punish well-placed shots. The front has a welcoming feel that lures the golfer while the back nine throws some wild elevations at the golfers. It seems like the land was found this way, and except for the 14th hole, the golf course's look is all-natural. It is a course where Tull and Emmett used the natural grades that were present to settle the tees, fairways, and greens.
The golf course is under $60 to play even during the peak days and times. The best deal here is the twilight unlimited play deal. That deal starts after 4pm, and it is only $28 to play. During the summer, most people will be able to get 18 holes in what they so choose.
The memorable signature hole is number 9, a par-3 over water that's a thrill every time you play it! While not their self-described signature hole, the volcano hole, number 14, is a par 4 where the green rises almost straight from the ground that everyone will enjoy trying to get birdie like Arnold Palmer did.
