Widow’s Walk in Scituate, MA, is a fun, exciting, and captivating course to play. From the layout to the conditions, the course is a must-play. On the website, it compares playing here to driving a race car on a tight racetrack, and they were correct. Try to overpower this course, and you will quickly find yourself looking at double bogey or worse. This course asks you to hit a particular shot, but it demands more from you.
The course is made for all types of players. To the high handicappers, there are no holes that will seem like only a low handicapper could get par. To the low handicappers, there are no holes on this course that do not require a bit of strategy and your undivided attention. If you are playing this course for the first time, it would be to your benefit to have their yardage book in your back pocket to keep to from getting too aggressive on the tee.
The course was designed as an eco-friendly course using an environmental approach to redevelop a quarry. Since the redevelopment, it has gone from void of vegetation to an ecological sanctuary. This means that there are more environmental areas with bird sanctuaries on the course that add to the amount of hazards golfers will face on the course. The trapping and hazards will take away shots while making it a lot harder to par a hole. They are well placed on the course but not unfair. They can be easily avoided but cannot be forgotten. There are also wastelands and “out of play” areas that force golfers to flight the ball the correct distance. The course is as beautiful to walk as it is to play. The course does not favor a cart player or walker. There is the 17th hole that will have you trying to hitchhike to the tee box, but this is an exception. The course at times has the feel of playing a golf round near an ocean cliff.
The most memorable part of the course is the variety of holes. This course has a lot to offer to all skill levels. There are plenty of fun par fours, thought-provoking par fives, and captivating par threes that all put a premium on precision. It is also interesting to note the way the designers have incorporated the natural terrain while keeping it environmentally friendly. From the waste areas that contain “out of play” areas to protect vegetation to the bird sanctuaries and even the use of recycled carpets to improve golf course maintenance throughout the course.
You will enjoy the walk as much as you will enjoy the golf at Widow’s Walk.
