Welcome to "The Zoo"! William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park

The William J. Devine Golf Course is located in Dorchester, MA. It is affectionally called "The Zoo" due to parties surrounding the golf course. Also, there is an actual zoo situated next door. The stories from this course are legendary (see Barstool Sport's article).

I am definitely partial to this course and the George Wright Golf Course (see the article about GW). I have played these courses since high school, and I have seen them become premier municipal golf courses in the Boston Metro area. For inner-city golf courses, these courses are worth playing. Boston has invested in these golf courses over the past 10 years, and the course is showing significant improvement from all the hard work.

William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park is a links-style course. The fairways are wide open, allowing the golfer to "spray and play" at "The Zoo." There is plenty of room on almost every hole to hit a ball 50 yards left or right of your target. This makes it a great course to start playing golf for the year. The course is exposed to weather conditions due to the lack of trees, which can make playing on a windy day a fun challenge. The greens too can speed up and harden fast due to The exposure. It does handle water well and stays green even in the hot summer days. When you consider this course has almost 20,000 rounds of golf played on each year and it stands up to the task each year, it is among my top choices to play golf. Enjoy and bombs away!

Conditions: It is a links-style course, so the elements are always a factor. Difficulty: This course is a place you can spray and play. Its bombs away, all day here. Practice Green: There are two greens, one for putting and one for chipping. The practice green feels and reacts like the greens on the course. Value: The value is good, great if you consider the spectating that goes on here. You will have some fun playing golf and most likely leave with a story from something you would not expect to see at a golf course. Range: There is no range. Wear a hard-hat: You could bring one here and have to use it. Luckily for you, you will most likely see coming long before you get hit as the course is wide open.
