The Ledges Golf Club is located in York, ME, not far from the Kittery outlet mall and Interstate 95. While its proximity remains close to civilization, the course feels like you are in the middle of the northern woods of Maine.

They have friendly and knowledgeable staff. I want to highlight the starter who told us about the bear sightings, the green speed, and the overall course conditions. I appreciate it when there is someone who can tell you that they are not cutting the greens because of the heat, so the greens will feel slow compared to the practice green. It feels like insider information that could give you an edge when playing there.

The course itself feels like the designer did not do much to change the natural topography, and that allowed him to keep a lot of the harsh landscape while exposing rock ledges. Along with excellent conditions, the course plays tough. There is a mix of blind first and second shots, bunkering around greens and fairways, forced carries, and hazards. There is a combo version of the tees on the scorecard. This is a feature that is growing in popularity for golfers looking to see what the course plays like from the back tees, while still having to play some holes from the forward tees.

I felt that this is a course that is laid out well for walkers. When I played it, it was the second 18 holes for me. I was able to walk it without to much trouble or having to jump on the other players’ cart. There were not many places that were long uphill walks in search of another hole. Even the 18th hole, which may be regarded as the toughest hole in the state playing 618 yards as a par 5 with two forced carries, did not take too much out of me physically to walk the entire hole.

Tee times are usually easy to come by and can be made 7 days in advance. Enjoy a round in Maine and try The Ledges Golf Club in York, ME.

Conditions: At this golf course, the conditions are excellent. It could be in the top 100 public golf courses. Difficulty: Tough course no matter which tees you are playing from as the holes feature water, bunkers, tall grass, and rocks out-cropping hence the name The Ledges. Practice Green: The putting green was a bit faster than the rest of the course, although that may have been due to the not cutting the greens as low to save them from the heat. Value: This is a $125-150 golf course for $55 if you walk. Range: There is a full range with Astro-carpeting instead of mats. Wear a hard-hat: No need to here. There are only a few holes that are next to each other, and they have trees protecting them from stray shots.
