The 6 Best Muni Golf Courses of 2019
The 6 Best Muni Golf Courses of 2019

In 2019, The Muni Tour featured over 25 municipal and public golf courses. Keeping true to our name, here are the six best municipal golf courses from the 2019 Muni Tour.

George Wright, aka “GW,” gets the top honor of being the best muni from 2019. It starts with a great layout from a renowned golf course designer Donald Ross. It has also been slowly improving the conditions of the golf course. Last year they renovated the 12th hole with a new fairway and tees, which made it look and play its best in years. Other improvements include restoring the course back to its original luster by removing overgrowth and exposing the hidden rock faces on the course. George Wright is the hidden gem in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. It rightfully deserves the number one ranking from 2019.

Second, on the list of best muni’s from 2019 is the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park, aka the Zoo. This second oldest place to play golf in the United States and it still holds up after 125 years. The course is fun because you can spray it and play it from anywhere due to the links-style set up. Yet, it can still be one of the toughest to play as it is completely exposed to the elements. Hopefully, the new handicap system will help those that play here due to the effect that conditions have on the new handicap system. Along with George Wright, William J. Devine is improving the golf and facilities. Last year they added a new patio along with other improvements to the clubhouse. Another gem in the Emerald Necklace of Boston, you will have a memorable experience, and you can expect to walk away with a story after playing this course.

Third on our 2019 best-of list is Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose, MA. This course offers a decent layout, variety, and some interesting holes that include views of the city of Boston. The course is fun for all levels of golfers, and the conditions continue to impress those that play here. The walk is challenging, and the topography of the holes will keep you coming back to play here again.

Braintree Municipal Golf Course in Braintree, MA.

Over the years, Braintree Municipal has gone through various changes. However, they still belong on here because there is no muni from last year that has greens like Braintree Muni. You come here for the golf you stay for the greens. They roll fast and true, which makes scoring a bit more challenging, but I believe everyone would instead putt the ball here than at some other private courses. The course itself offers a variety of par 4s that will keep golfers interested throughout the 18 holes.

The par 3, 8th hole at Fresh Pond Golf Course in Cambridge, MA.

Fresh Pond Golf Course in Cambridge, MA, is sure to be on your places to play next year, which is why we have on our list of best Muni courses from 2019. It is a great course when you are looking for 9 holes before or after work or just a place to play golf when you do not have time for 18 holes. However, the course may have a bit longer playing times compared to most places as it is only 9 holes, so make sure to get there as early as possible.

The par 4, 18th hole at the Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course in Brookline, MA.

You may be searching somewhere else to find some great golf. Still, you should not overlook the Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course, aka Putterham. Brookline Golf Course is still true to its 1933 original design by Stiles and Van Kleek. Putterham offers 18 holes of pure municipal golf. The conditions will vary during the year, as is typical of a municipal golf course. There is a range here for those that show up early for the tee time or just looking to get some more swings in during the year.

I hope you were able to enjoy these last year or will be adding these courses to your next year’s list of must-play golf courses. Looking forward to another great year on The Muni Tour in 2020!
