Presidents Golf Course dates back to 1895 when it was initially known as the Wollaston Golf Club. Once a favorite of Francis Ouimet for its harsh playing conditions due to its varying weather. After a redesign by George and Tom Fazio, it appears in the form you see and play today.
Do not look past the yardage as being too short or too easy of a course to play. This course will make you use every club in your bag. Even if there is a par three that requires an accurate wedge shot or par four that is drivable, this course will test your overall game. Get too aggressive on this course, and you could take away any chance you had a birdie or even a par.
There is a much variation in the topography, from hills, mounds to grass bunkers, and well-positioned trees to protect against an easy recovery shot. Some holes are slow climbs while other holes rise and drop severely. It makes the walk more compelling.
I thought the conditions were looking great after the fall work was completed. Greens were running in the 10s and felt close to the 11s, and they were smooth. The course can play hard as there are exposed holes that help the wind play havoc on your shots.
Presidents Golf Course is a more straightforward course layout to play due to the length. There are plenty of birdie holes for any golfer. As much as the course seems like a place to spray and play, it does not play that way. Tee shots do not need to be exceptionally long from any of the tee boxes, well placed second and third shots will need to be struck to have a good score shot here. While trees, mounds, bunkers and water hazards vary throughout the 18 holes and seem to keep your game in check if you hit a poor shot.
The most memorable hole is most likely the 4th hole as it contains a view of Boston minus the price of another public course in the area. From the 4th hole tee and green, you can see the entire city. As the fall sets in here in New England, be sure to put The Presidents Golf Course on the list of courses to play before the end of the golf season.
Conditions: Greens were running about average Muni speeds, and they were smooth.
Difficulty: An uncomplicated course to play. However, if the weather conditions are harsh or windy, it can make it much tougher to score well here.
Practice Green: Yes, there is practice that seems to mimic the greens on the course.
Value: The price here is that sweet spot of $50 on the weekends and $40 on the weekdays. However, the twilight rate here of $33 on the weekends is one of the best prices around. A fun walk on a Sunday afternoon will have you looking forward to your next round.
Range: There is no range. There is a warm-up area that includes mats and nets to hit balls.
Wear a hard-hat: Going to need a hard-hat as the holes run close to each other.
