Fact: There is a municipal golf course in Brockton, and it is worth playing. Most people hear golf and Brockton in the same sentence, and they stop listening. Talk to others that know this course, and they will tell you it’s an excellent course with great greens. It has those hard greens that are still receptive and can even run smooth and fast. I stumbled upon D.W. Field because a friend had moved to Avon, MA, the next town over from Brockton. We were looking for golf courses in the area and found this course. We went for the first time to check it out, for only $25, we thought why not play this course. We ended up playing this course at least five times that year. The greens were all we talked about. They were awesome. Apparently, they had a Barstool golf tournament there the week before, and the course was peaking from that tournament.
The course is only 6,000 yards or so from the tips, so it is not very long. The course was designed by some famous designers (Stiles and Van Kleet) in the 1930s. They have built some other timeless golf courses in the New England area. The course layout is a bit quirky, considering that you walk past the clubhouse after the 7th hole, not the 9th. Some holes have most likely changed over the years, so there are some long walks between holes. Also, some gaps could have you scratching your head as to where is the next hole. The golf course is continuing to improve as well. New tees are being built, they have taken some trees out to improve conditions of the grass, and they have continued to improve the quality of the golf course each year since I have started playing here. When people ask me where to play, or where I play, I try to mention this golf course. It definitely has a bit of shock factor because of where it is located. However, one round here and you will be coming back to play it again.
Conditions: Variable tee to green. The greens are though…almost indescribable. You do not often come across greens like these at a Muni. They are hard because they are old but hold spin. They are typically fast and green in the summertime too. Difficulty: This course is not very long or hard. Only a couple of genuinely challenging holes. This course is still fun if you are an advanced golfer and open enough for a beginner golfer to chase their ball around. Practice Green: It is flat and rolls true to the rest of the greens on the course. They allow chipping on to the putting surface too. Value: Great Value here to play these greens. 35 for 18 then drops to 25 dollars. Range: There is no range at this golf course. Wear a hard-hat: YES! Most definitely keep your head on a swivel. A golf ball is bound to whizz past while playing.
