Worst (and Best) Times/Days to Play a Muni

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

If you are a Muni Golfer, the start of the week is the best time of the week to get the tee time you and your foursome want for the weekend. Calling the course as early as possible in the week can leave you with some choices to make. Especially when it comes to making a time that you can still have time to enjoy the rest of your day.

The Earliest Tee Time (Sunrise)

This is my favorite tee time for the weekends. It guarantees a 3-hour round or less. You will only be sharing the course with the mowers. However, you may not have many friends that are willing to golf with you at this time. The Earliest Tee time typically means that the night before is ended early, or you may not make your tee time. This time during the week also allows for 9 holes or possibly 18 holes before work.

The Mid-Morning Tee Time (8-12pm)

This is probably the slowest tee time slot for a weekend spot at most courses. Anyone in this block of time will not miss their tee time, and the course is full by now. There is no chance of getting out of here before the evening. This time would work better during the week; however, you could run into some leagues and tournaments at these times.

The Early Afternoon Tee Time (1pm-~3/4pm)

Only on the hottest/wettest of summer days will this time keep people from golfing at Muni. You are better off waiting until later if this is the earliest tee time on the weekend. Playing golf at this time will be no better than the pace they want to play, and you could spend more of your time at the course than any other tee time.

This is also the best tee time during the week. If I am playing golf any day Monday thru Friday, I plan my day around this time. It is early enough to beat the afternoon rush before any leagues and late enough that most of the course is cut that day.

The Late Afternoon Round (~3/4pm-Sunset)

This is another favorite tee time of mine. You get to play until its dark, and the course is cleared of beginner golfers most of the time because they do not think they can get in 18 holes after 4 pm. I would typically have the course to myself as I stroll around. Also, it generally is cooling off by now, so the weather is a bit more enjoyable for a walk instead of having to use a cart.

Although this time is excellent for the weekend, it is also the worst time to play during the week. There are leagues, school teams, and people who are getting out of work trying to golf as much as possible on a beautiful day.

So, choose wisely as you look forward to your next tee time at a Muni or public golf course.
